Ica, Peru

After a day at sea Amsterdam docked at General San Martin. This desolate port is near Pisco, Peru.

A freighter shared the dock with the Ms Amsterdam.

Like Arica, much of the coast is a desert.

The Peruvian Government has, in Ica, a small but pleasant museum containing many interesting works of the successive inhabitants of the area.

The precision of many pots suggests a wheel was used. Some of the pots are very large.

We then went to the Ica airport where this Cessna Caravan was ready to fly us to the Nazca Plain. This, in 65 years of flying, was my first flight in a single engine plane.

Of course, the Caravan is one of the largest single engine planes around, and carries more passengers than the plane I started in, and its turbine will probably run a lot longer without a failure than both of the Whirlwinds in the DC2 put together. The pictures I took from the airplane are on Nazca Lines.

On our return to Ica Airport, our co-pilot let me have his picture taken with the Caravan.

I wish all airports were as nice as Ica.
